Universal Destinations & Experiences officially announced on Tuesday that it intends to build its first-ever theme park and resort in the United Kingdom.
In 2023, Universal purchased a 476-acre parcel of land outside Bedford, England, about 55 miles north of London. The new theme park will be the first Universal theme park in the U.K. and the first in Europe.
Proposed plans for the theme park resort, which are subject to approval, will include “several themed lands featuring Universal’s distinct style of immersive and thrilling rides, innovative attractions and exciting entertainment,” according to a news release.
The resort will also feature a 500-room hotel and a retail, dining and entertainment complex.
The new development is set to have “a transformative impact” on Bedford and the U.K. economy and will be a major contributor to “creative arts and tourism industries, generating nearly £50 billion of economic benefit for the UK and creating thousands of new, high-quality jobs,” a news release said. That amount translates to more than $63.8 billion.
At opening, the park is expected to be one of the largest employers in the region.
U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer celebrated the new theme park development and job creation.
“It is not just about numbers; it’s about securing real opportunities for people in our country. Together, we are building a brighter future for the UK, getting people into work and ensuring our economy remains strong and competitive,” Starmer said in a statement.
Construction on the proposed development is expected to start in 2026.
