A man suspected of threatening Walmart customers and employees before activating a Taser toward responding officers was arrested without injury in Palm Springs Tuesday night, police said.
Officers were dispatched to the store just after 11 p.m. regarding a call of a man armed with a knife who was refusing to leave, the Palm Springs Police Department posted on Facebook Wednesday afternoon.
“Upon arriving on scene, officers located the suspect, identified as Jason Sandoval, outside the store in possession of a knife, taser, and pepper spray.” police said.
The caller indicated that Sandoval had attempted to discharge the pepper spray inside the store and threatened customers and workers.
When authorities made contact with Sandoval he refused to comply with orders and then “turned his aggression toward officers, activating his taser in their direction,” police said.
Officers used several tactics including multiple Taser deployments, a pepper ball launcher and a 40mm less-lethal launcher in an attempt to subdue Sandoval. A K-9 unit was also used to assist in containment efforts.
“Even as Sandoval continued to advance and threaten officers with an activated taser, the response remained focused on subduing the suspect without causing serious harm,” police said.
Sandoval was eventually sent to the ground by a “well-timed Taser application” and was safely disarmed without injury despite remaining noncompliant, police said.
Sandoval was arrested and booked in Indio on suspicion of resisting an executive officer, robbery, felon in possession of a stun gun, felon in possession of tear gas and exhibiting a deadly weapon, other than a firearm.
