A man and woman are fighting for their lives following a crash involving a wrong-way driver that left the suspect and the couple’s baby dead in the Vermont Square neighborhood of Los Angeles Monday night.
The incident was reported around 11:30 p.m. as the family of three was traveling southbound on Western Avenue near 46th Street when police say a man in a stolen vehicle was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed and crossed over the center divider.
Surveillance video of the crash obtained by KTLA from El Pueblo Market at 4706 Western Ave. shows the suspect in a white vehicle swerving to the wrong side of the street before slamming head-on into the driver’s side of the victim’s vehicle.
The suspect’s vehicle then spins out of control and flips over leaving shattered glass and auto parts scattered in the street.
Police confirmed that a child in the victim’s vehicle who was less than a year old died at the scene. The parents, both believed to be in their 30s, were taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
LAPD Detective Moreno said the suspect in the stolen vehicle was ejected and also died at the scene. He was described only as a man in his 40s.
Investigators believe the driver of the stolen vehicle reached speeds upwards of 100 mph at times but may have lost control after seeing police nearby and attempting to slow down.
Police said they were not in pursuit of the driver at the time of the crash and are continuing the investigation.
